Crispy, Crunchy, Homemade Pickles

One of my favorite things to make in the canning season is pickles. Not sure why, but I love it.  I've never come across a store bought pickle that tastes as good. Unless you make kerosene pickles like Aunt Bea :)

The method that I have found to work best for me is to use Mrs. Wages mixes. Thankfully, the bent-n-dent store had a bunch of them for .50 ea. Yep, I bought every single one!! I was getting concerned that maybe I wouldn't have enough when it came time make the pickles. Pulled out all the packages and learned I had enough for 65 quarts of pickles. I think I'm safe for this year at least :P

Our 1st big picking. Don't look like many but they added up to 9 pints. YEAH!!

Simple tools of the process.

Don't ya just love progress :)

Those cukes will never be the same.

The result - crispy, crunchy, bread & butter pickles. YUM!

Interesting little note - I don't remember all the details but I was reminded today of when I was a little girl in Greene County PA. My mom and dad always had several large gardens and one year the local paper must of caught wind of mom's pickle making.  She still has the pictured article of her pickles :)

Blessings to ya!

Pepperoni Bundles

Thought I'd share these tasty tidbits I made for the kid's and my supper.  Since my sweetheart is driving truck meal times when he is on the road have become more relaxed and kid friendly. :)

As most of us know by now, refrigerated biscuits and croissants in a can are no longer supposed to be eaten  as is. Well you can, but don't limit yourself to just that.  Below I will show you how I took 1 can of each and turned them into what I'm calling "pepperoni bundles".

*Unroll the croissants from the can.  Place about 1 tablespoon of shredded cheese and 2 pepperoni at the widest part.

*Fold them into bundles.

*Remove biscuits from the can.  Split each one in half.

*Sprinkle the cheese and about 4 pepperoni.

*Pinch closed with a fork.
Bake in a 375* oven for 16-17 minutes.

I served these with spaghetti sauce sprinkled with sugar. Yes, I'm one of those people who like my sauce to have a sweet taste to it :)  My boys loved them!!

Blessings to ya!!

Goodwill Bargains

I love reading blogs where people share their bargains.  It's inspiring to see how others decorate their home for a little bit of nothing.  There was a time when brand new items from Home Interiors was the only way I decorated.  Well that is not possible for me to do when I want a home that is beautiful and cozy while on a tight budget.  So I go to yard sales and thrift stores for all my decorating.  Trust me you can decorate you home to look like you have $$$ with these bargains.

So I'm sharing the few things I found this Friday from Goodwill during their 1/2 off everything sale.

I couldn't get a picture that did this little, sun catcher justice.  I have found that bright blue pops in my "burnt gingerbread" painted kitchen.  I got this for $1.00.  It is very cherry and my little kids just love it.

I got these delightful little pots for $.25 a piece.  I have them sitting on the back of the stove.  Love how the paint has some "chips" in it.

This copper tone lantern cost $1.00, came with the bright blue candle. I have it sitting on the back of the stove as well.  I love lanterns and won't think twice to snatch it up for that price. :)

Those two collections together.  I love my kitchen.

The sweet, ceramic jug cost $1.00.  It is being used to hold hand lotion.  The candle holder came from my "Secret Sister" from church.  Just love the punched tin.  It goes perfect in my outhouse bathroom.  The candle is a $.10 Goodwill bargain.

This is NOT a Goodwill bargain.  But I wanted to share it, because my sweet husband made it for me this weekend.  And I just had to share it with my blog friends.  He is very artistic with a scroll saw.  I love this!!

Blessings to ya!!

An outhouse can & Around the yard

You are probably thinking this lady has gone nuts posting 2x's about trash cans.  Maybe a little but that's besides the point. haha    A while back I was needing a new trash can for the bathroom.  The old one was falling apart.  Someone bought my kids this gigantic barrel of cheese balls about the same time.  It makes a great trash can.  Very sturdy, don't think its going to fall apart anytime soon if ever unless one of my kids takes a baseball bat to it.

Here's what I did.  I sprayed it with Krylon cream, sprayed with Krylon periwinkle, then wrapped leftover wall border around it.  I attached it the same way you would a wall.  It matches my bathroom perfectly!!

Below are some pictures from around our yard.  Enjoy!
One of my favorite spots-A special place for our 2 small angels.

Happy Friday!!

Does Jesus Care?

Thanks to blog world and Facebook we are constantly updated with the news of people's personal lives like never before.  At different times I've wondered has life always been this sad and hard on people or is it one more "signs of the times".  Seems like every time I log into FB someone else has died, another person struck with a horrible illness, family issues, not to mention a lot of complaining in general.  It seems to be a vicious, never-ending cycle.  Looking back over history, I have to realize that it's always been this way.  We are just more exposed to it because of the Internet, phones, and TV.

Several of my friends are currently going through very dark times.  Some are dealing with grief over a death, another is watching their child suffer with cancer, while a couple of others having spouses who are in the hospital, and some who feel like they are at the end of their rope financially.  Sometimes I find myself wanting to grow crusty around the edges from all the negativity.

I know from experience that when life's trials get to be overwhelming it can cause one to wonder:

*"Does Jesus care when my heart is pained too deeply for mirth or song, as the burdens press, and the cares distress, and the way grows weary and long?

*Does Jesus care when my way is dark with a nameless dread and fear?  As the daylight fades into deep night shades.  Does He care enough to be near?

*Does Jesus care when I've tried and failed to resist some temptation strong. When for my deep grief I find no relief, tho my tear flow all the night long.

*Does Jesus care when I've said good-bye to the dearest on earth to me,  and my sad heart aches till it nearly brakes?  Is it aught to Him?  Does He see?"

My mind goes to a personal experienced I had about year ago.  I received a phone call that my dad had been taken to the hospital having all the symptoms of a heart attack.  Living 2 hours from the hospital and having a son in school I didn't jump in my car and rush on over.  I waiting to find out just what really was going on before find someone to watch my kids, etc...  I knew I was doing what I needed to do, but I had a brother who didn't think so.  He proceeded to call me 2 times and call me every nasty name in the book.  I hung up on him both times.  I don't take stupidity from anyone no matter the situation.

Upon having an intelligent conversation with my mom a little while later.  I decided that the situation was bad enough I better take the trip.  To make a long story short, upon arrival at Allegheny General the atmosphere was so tense you couldn't cut it with a jack-knife.  Part way through the evening I took a walk, desperately feeling the need for help because I felt like I was "alone in a crowded room".  I couldn't think of anyone I knew who I could really call and ask them to pray for me.  As I was spilling my heart out to God that I had no one, He very gently reminded me that I did have someone to pray.  It was none other then Jesus Himself.

Romans 8:26

New Living Translation (NLT)
26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.

That realization alone gave me so much strength I felt like I could take on the whole world.  A peace and quiet settled all over me and I was able to get through the next few days.  I knew that little moment with God would stay with me for a long time.  And there have been times since that I have needed the reminder.

Can I tell you that Jesus does care!!  Let me encourage you that whatever your trial, don't turn to facebook as your only release source.  But rather go to Jesus.  He wants to hear you call out to Him for help.  He is already taking your need(s) to the throne.  Trust Him!!!

A "New" Trash Can

Probably never thought you'd read a blog post about a trash can. :)  But when it involves spray paint, why not!!  I have had the same yucky blue trash can for the last 9 years and 10 months we've been married.  It has never matched any of my kitchens.  It came with the marriage since it had been hubby's in college. haha  So I've been using it all along and really never paid much attention to it.  Really, who does?!?! Until recently!! And then I am thinking that thing is hideous and needs to go.

Have you seen the prices for a "cheap" trash can lately.  Highway robbery I tell ya! After one trip past them in Wally World I knew that wasn't happening anytime soon.  Then I remembered my collection of spray paint.  Ah yes!! Tis a wonderful thing spray paint is.  You should try it yourself sometime.  Use Krylon, its the best.
 Shall we say YUCK!

Much better!!!  I sprayed it white first to act as a primer then sprayed it Pebble.

An up-close of the decal I stuck on.  You can get these on ebay and Wal-Mart.  My oldest son has these in his room. I didn't think 1 less would hurt.  haha  Goes perfect with my woodsy kitchen.

I am new to the blogging party world.  But excited to give it a try.  I love reading others blogs, many of you out there are such an inspiration!!
